Within the scope of the international research collaboration conducted with Abbes Laghrour Khenchela University of Algeria, joint studies were carried out on semiconductor-based thin-film materials at Istanbul Technical University (ITU) Ayazağa Campus.
During the visit, Meriem Gasmi and Khemissi Lahouel conducted experimental work together with ITU faculty member Prof. Dr. Nilgün Baydoğan and PhD student Büşra Günalan in laboratory settings on ZnO–NiO heterostructures, NiO thin films, optical–structural characterization processes, and photocatalytic performance analyses.
As a result of this collaboration, important publications were produced in SCI-indexed journals:
- Meriem Gasmi, Abdelkader Djelloul, Sabrina Iaiche, Khemissi Lahouel, Nilgun Baydogan (2025).
Excellent photocatalytic activity of ZnO–NiO heterojunction thin film in the sunlight range with enhanced UV photodetection behaviour,
Journal of Sol–Gel Science and Technology, 114, 699–717 (2025).

- Gasmi M., Baydogan N., Gunalan B., Lahouel K., Iaiche S., Djelloul A. (2023).
Synthesis of Nanostructured NiO Thin Film Derived by Sol–Gel Dip Coating Technique,
International Scientific Conference IV, Baku, Azerbaijan.
These studies strengthen ITU’s international research capacity in thin-film technologies, photocatalytic materials, and semiconductor-based energy applications. Furthermore, they contribute to sustainable academic cooperation between the two countries by enabling young researchers to gain mutual laboratory experience.
