At the Boğaziçi Energy Summit 2025, organized on 29 November 2025 by the Boğaziçi University Electrotechnology Club (BUEC IEEE Power and Energy Society), Prof. Dr. Nilgün Baydoğan, a faculty member of the Istanbul Technical University Energy Institute, delivered her invited talk titled “Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Next-Generation Nuclear Energy.”

In the talk, the strategic importance of the nuclear fuel cycle—one of the fundamental components of the energy transition—was addressed from technological, environmental, and economic sustainability perspectives. The presentation included evaluations on:

• Safety paradigms of Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technologies,
• The Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) approach,
• Implementation of safety principles independent of human error in modern nuclear systems,
• The integrated role of the fuel cycle in the energy transition.

Introduction of the NUK Program, Student Awareness, and Societal Impact

This invited talk served as an important engagement platform that strengthened the national visibility of the ITU Nuclear Energy Science and Engineering Program (NUK). The summit, which attracted numerous undergraduate and graduate students from various universities, reinforced young researchers’ interest in nuclear energy technologies.

The event also held significant value in terms of societal contribution and awareness by:

• Supporting accurate information flow on nuclear safety and modern reactor technologies,
• Increasing academic awareness among students regarding the NUK program,
• Making ITU’s scientific position and educational capacity in the field of nuclear energy visible to a broader audience.

Prof. Baydoğan thanked the organizing BUEC IEEE team and expressed that the strong interest of the students was highly motivating.
