The project led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayşe Nur Esen, focusing on the characterization of the high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector–based gamma spectrometer at Istanbul Technical University (ITU) Energy Institute, has been granted support under the TÜBİTAK 3501 – Career Development Program. The research team includes Res. Asst. Deniz Agehan Kahraman and Res. Asst. Erdi Şirin from ITU Energy Institute, as well as Assoc. Prof. Dr. Esra Uyar from Gazi University.
The project aims to model the HPGe detector in detail using experimental methods and advanced Monte Carlo simulation techniques, and to reliably determine its measurement performance. Upon completion, the HPGe gamma spectrometry system will be fully characterized, and the applied methodology will be validated through an international proficiency test, demonstrating its reliability. These outcomes will enable high-precision measurements of natural and artificial radioactivity in various sample types such as environmental samples, food products, and building materials, contributing significantly to the advancement of environmental radiation research.
