Energy Institute Supports the Turkey's Energy Transformation with Market Based Energy Efficiency Mechanisms.
ITU Energy Institute Department of Energy Planning and Management member Prof. Dr. Sermin Onaygil’s project “Market Based Energy Efficiency Policy Mechanism Instruments for Enhancing Turkey’s Energy Transition” is granted by SHURA Energy Transition Center through ITUNOVA Technology A.Ş.. Also, Regulatory Assistance Project (RAP) is international partner of the project.
The aim of the project is to examine the market-based policy mechanism instruments to accelerate Turkey's energy transition through energy efficiency, and propose a roadmap for the implementation of these instruments which are the Energy Efficiency Obligation Scheme and Energy Efficiency Auctions.
The first work package of the project, examining the international current situation with examples regarding the Energy Efficiency Obligation Scheme and Energy Efficiency Auctions in the electricity sector, revealing Turkey's current market structure, and making benchmark for design features of each mechanism including the financing dimension, was completed. Currently, Prof. Dr. Sermin Onaygil is working on the second work package with her team, Dr. Ebru Acuner and Res. Assist. Rabia Cin, SHURA Energy Transition Center and RAP. They are conducting stakeholder interviews to evaluate the applicability of these mechanisms in Turkey.
The project, which will create a road map for Turkey for the implementation of these mechanisms also defined in the National Energy Efficiency Action Plan of Turkey, is expected to be completed around April 2022.
